Abstract Choreography Prompts

Collect 10 regular (not dance) pictures. Create the shapes with your body that you see in the pictures. Create transitions to get from one shape to the next.
Write steps for the style you are choreographing on sheets of paper and throw them into a hat. The order you draw them out in is the order they go in.
Assign broad movements to dice or a suit of cards, such as turn, jump, melt, kick etc. As you roll the dice or draw cards, choreograph the dance using a different step each time (the first time you roll turn, do a chaine, the next a pirouette, the next a pique turn etc.)
Draw a random shape on a sheet of paper. Create a dance that follows the pathway of that shape on the floor.
Create several short phrases based on elements (a time phrase, energy phrase etc.), number your phrases, put the numbers in a hat or roll dice.
Record yourself improvising and choose movement from the video to set into choreography. Some variations:
1. Improvise with just one body part
2. Improvise starting slow and getting faster or vice versa
3. Improvise within a square on the floor (sidewalk square) or inside a doorway
4. Improvise only on the floor
5. Improvise alternating between moving in place and moving around the room
6. Improvise alternating sharp/smooth or heavy/light
Choose any piece of writing and randomly circle words. Choreograph a movement to go with each word and a transition between each of your word movements.
Create a dance that does not use any discernable technical steps. You can only use gestures (reaching, shaking, tapping etc.) and common movements such as walking, running, skipping etc.
